See you over there!!!!
Been a pretty busy month. Even though so much has happened I just haven’t found the time to come on here and blab about it.
Music is always in the works. I am always busy at the Combat Guitars office. I am thinking about working with different snakes a lot. My daughter keeps me active, and subsequently VERY TIRED. I am wondering what the fuck happened to Wakkun.
That’s it in a nutshell, I guess. Any big music developments will always be posted here. And if anyone out there know’s if Wakkun is even still alive, please let me know!
I will be back on here again soon.
Oh, and go check out Austrian Death Machine. That’s some funny ass shit.
Cvil.
Anyone who knows me, knows I am a really big horror film fan. Forget most hollywood stuff, I am talking about low budget, indie, Bgrade type stuff. Even some SOV (that’s Shot On Video, for those who don’t know) is really amazing.
I really can’t get enough of these movies. Sometimes, the cheesier the better. Less really is MORE.
Anyway, so when I was approached a month back by indie horror film company CREEPERSIN about using one of the old U.K.L songs in one of their latest film projects, I didn’t even hesitate.
This is such a perfect match. The film is called VAGINAL HOLOCAUST. What’s this movie about? Well, as I was told by Creepersin: ”..the movie itself is about a group of porn stars that go on a camping trip in the woods. Along come some redneck vampires who attack them, killing all but one girl. She survives but her vagina turns vampiric, grows teeth and she goes to exact revenge on the monsters that turned her pussy into a vampire. Sound fun?”
Somehow, yes ..that does sound kinda fun.
The last I heard, U.K.L’s song “Vampire” was going to be used during a fight scene between this poor woman’s carnivorous vagina and a group of Vampires.
Sounds like even MORE fun!
They have even graciously cut the entire extended trailer for the film to the song, and you can go to Creepersin’s blog page here to see it:
After clicking the link above and checking out the trailer, be sure to contact Creepersin and bother them endlessly about how and where you can get a copy of Vaginal Holocaust.

I recently heard a guy, who plays in a band whose name I will not mention, say “All the bands the kids like these days are shit”.
This is a thought which has been on my mind for quite a long time, even before hearing someone else mention my sentiments exactly.
Seriously.. what the fuck is up with Rock N Roll? Nevermind all the pop and top40 fucking garbage that’s all over the tv and radio, those plagues to music and society cannot be classified as Rock N Roll. No, I am talking about all the bands who try to pass themselves off as being Rock N Roll, and who actually get “categorized” as being Rock N Roll.
I don’t want to even mention sub-genres, or even certain band names. The thought of even doing so makes me wanna pound my fist into something. The haircuts, the lame content of the songs, the painfully annoying singing-screaming bullshit, their “image”, and their “rock-star” attitudes are a goddamn festering boil embedded into the music I love so much and that has saved my life.
Over-produced, badly written songs. Weak, pretty-boy images, all mass produced and shrink-wrapped by an evil recording industry (that is well on it’s way out) to be sold to the masses by the truck load.
Am I the only one here? Does anyone else, when they turn on their local “music” channel INSTANTLY get filled with hatred, disgust and rage at what they see singing and dancing back at them?? What the fuck happend to Rock N Roll?????
Rock N Roll is NOT dead. There ARE a handful of bands still out there, still slaving away, still being true to themselves and to the worthy cause of taking up guitars as their arms, marching forever onward, carrying the torch and flying the flag rebellion. Of Rock N Roll.
I really had to go back to the roots recently. Anything and everything I heard that was even remotely recent just turned me off. Made me not just want to stop playing music, but stop listening to it entirely. The only things that didn’t make me wanna puke in my shoes was old Sabbath albums, Thin Lizzy, Zepplin, Motorhead, AC/DC, and the like.
Getting back to the recent bands that are still creating their own path on their own terms and not bending over to take the fists full of cash up their arses by a recording industry that has gotten away with far too much for far too long; I will hail the likes of 4 bands, and the subsequent key sub-genres of Rock N Roll that they represent. Airbourne (pure blues-based rock n roll, carrying the torch of AC/DC) DoomRiders (classic rock influenced doom. Sabbath meets Lizzy). Coliseum. (Death N Roll at it’s finest). Zeke (blistering hardcore punk rock infused rock n roll).
They have always said that music (like many things) comes full circle. There is a drought, and then out of nowhere a few bands or a scene immediately erupts and makes everyone’s music library obsolete.
Well I gotta say, the well has been fuckin dry for too many years. The aforementioned 4 bands, though very important, will most likely not be the torch bearers of the long awaited, and much needed overhaul in Rock N Roll music. But I will boldly state that they are certainly paving the fuckin’ way and clearing the shit off the road for our new generation of Saviors.
With the overload of pop garbage, shit bands, hitler hair-cuts, and a dying music recording industry; Rock N Roll will live on. An overhaul is much needed. We have suffered this drought for far too long. Change is coming. History tells us that this is inevitable. What form it will come in makes me as nervous as it does excited. It’s all I have to look forward to. An army of soldiers, a “New Resistance” rising up with guitars as their arms.
Viva Rock N Roll!
Here’s an awesome performance of Thin Lizzy back in 1978 with Gary Moore on guitar. Two classic songs in a row! Happy Birthday Phil. You will be forever missed.
Happy Birthday Phil Lynott!
Ok, ok, I KNOW- Phil’s birthday was YESTERDAY. I never got the chance to sign in here and post my respects till now.
Phil would have been 60 years old yesterday, if drugs hadn’t taken him out of this world back in January 1986. It’s hard to believe that in just another year and a half it will be the 25th anniversary of Phil’s death.
Phil’s music, and his band Thin Lizzy, have been a massive influence on me my whole life, and still to this day. I still look to Lizzy’s music for inspiration.
Happy Birthday Phil. Still remembering you nearly 25 years on and counting!
R.I.P.
Tomorrow begins another week long forced holiday.
When you work at a job that pays you by the hour, these “holiday’s” really blow.
Feels like we just had a week long holiday.. oh yeah, WE DID. It was called “Golden Week” back in May. Or, as I like to call it, “God Damn Week”.
Looking at my calender, I am blown away by the fact that we will have ANOTHER week long forced holiday next month too!
Ya know, if I worked a salary job I would be singing a different tune. But, like so many, I rely on actually BEING AT WORK to pay my bills. No paid holidays for this blue collar. No “bonuses”, and no “benefits”. But in today’s economic state, felt all over the world, I really don’t have much to complain about. I continue to look on the bright side (for lack of a better term), and count my damn blessings. (haha, even I found that cynicism funny).
Things can ALWAYS be worse. Infinitely worse. You don’t really need to try very hard, or look very far, to notice people who have it much worse than you do.
What I like to boil it down to is this; instead of looking at what other people have and what I don’t, I look at what I do have and do my damn best with it. I haven’t always made the best decisions with what I have, but that’s life. You live and learn, and do better next time.
Instead of moaning about the huge loss of money because of these forced holidays, I will turn it into an OPPORTUNITY.
I am not leaving my apartment for the entire week! I will sacrifice a few things here and there to get through the small pay period to come, and this whole week locked away in my apartment I will use the opportunity to spend more time with my daughter (good point #1) and also WRITE SOME TUNES! (good point #2).
We have been getting A LOT of fucked-up weather these days. (Wait, do earth quakes count as “weather”? ) Anyway, a big one on Sunday night, another big one this morning, and NOW I am hearing news 13 people died just south of us because of a typhoon. Torrential rains and flooding. Man, sure puts my lame pay period in perspective. This is not the ongoing tragedies of Africa, the Middle East, North Korea or South America which usually haunt my conscience and weigh my heart. This is my own backyard. Just a few hours drive away, people have lost everything, including their very lives.
This month’s week long holiday is called “Obon”. Where we are supposed to remember our dead. Thank them for the remaining impact of how what they have done for us still effects our lives, and honor them with remembrance. The “Obon Festival” stems from India, rooted in the Buddhist beliefs of the Ullambana Sutra, and the Japanese people believe that during the Obon Festival their ancestor’s Spirit’s return home. So naturally, it is during this time that all the families gather together.
I believe Obon is also a time of self-reflection. To meditate on your own life, as well as the lives of the departed. To reflect, to collect joy and thankfulness- not just for getting the things in life you desire, but more importantly the joy of being shown the truth- the joy of awareness.
Though I am without a family to celebrate Obon with, I can still maintain an inner and outward expression of celebration. Obon has reminded me to continue to remember, honor and love my departed father, and to show care and respect towards my mother. To be thankful for the gift of fatherhood myself, and to strive for a practice of selfless giving. Not to just my family and beloved friends- but to all beings.
Considering all the above mentioned, instead of complaining about the week long holiday, and subsequent loss of wages, I have more than enough things in my life to shut-the-fuck-up about and be thankful for.
Since I live in Tokyo, I thought I would throw out a little recommended listening of a Tokyo band. These guys are not friends of mine, meaning that I have never met them. But, I came across them by chance, and I think they rip.
Check em’ out, you’ll think they rip too. “Church Of Misery” from Tokyo!

Time to recommend some cool shit:
Check these bands out. You won’t regret it.
I mentioned a few of these bands in a previous blog, but I will lump it all in here agin, because this is what I am REALLY digging on these days.
A combination of all these bands is really influencing the musical direction I am taking.
I even included links, because I am both nice and bored;
GRAILS
ULVER
WARDRUNA
TYRANT
HIGH ON FIRE
BONGZILLA
COLISEUM
Ok, that’s enough recommended music for one day.
Whenever I come across some cool shit, I will post them up here.
Keep it greasy.
Colin.

Pick up one of these things, click on the video below,
turn it up loud, and let it flow suckas!
Something that annoys me a bit:
Living here in Japan, and wanting to go see a good show.
When a band or artist from abroad comes to Japan these days it is, more times than not, as a part of a big event or festival.
Why this sucks:
1. You have to travel so far out of the city to the location of these big events.
2. The ticket prices are outrageous
3. Because there is so many bands playing these events, the set times are too damn short
4. Even if you do say “fuck it” and try to go anyway, the tickets sell out in like 2 seconds.
SOMETIMES when a band comes all the way to Japan to join these events or festivals they will do a few shows on their own. Granted, sometimes bands DO come here all on their own, for their own shows. But then the same downer applies: outrageous ticket prices, and the tickets sell out so friggin quick.
Most of these tickets get bought up by these crafty “auction site” assholes. Cyber scalpers. Selling tickets for shows on auction sites for FUCKING RIDICULOUS prices. It amazes me that they can get away with such robbery, and that people actually buy tickets from these evil fucking douche bags.
Damn, I am dying to go see a good show.
It’s been a while.
